March 27 The Cliffs Park: A Community Garden Due to the weather, snow covered frozen ground, and
anticipated high winds, the garden workshop for Saturday,
March 27 is canceled. However, if anyone can help on
Tuesday, March 30, please let me know and we will schedule a
time. It looks like the weather will be more favorable if
the weatherman can be believed.
We need to prepare
the soil in the hay bale cold frame, plant lettuce seeds,
and transplant bok choy and kale starts into the cold
frame. We also need to get more pallets to make "bins" to
organize and separate donations of chicken manure and goat
manure which donors have offered to take to the site. If we
could make a few more pallet bins someone could go and get
some alpaca manure as well. IF YOU HAVE A SOURCE of PALLETS
and can take them to the garden site Tuesday, it would be
wonderful.
If the ground is thawed, we can continue
work on digging up and transplanting yucca that is on the
garden plot site.
If anyone can get truckloads of
manure delivered on Tuesday it would also be helpful. Robin
and the donations task group are on Spring Break so their
transportation resources are not available to go and get
manure. We need LOTS of horse and cow manure in
anticipation of spreading it on the 0.43 acre section and
plowing it in when the soil is ready.
And we still
need rotted hay for this phase of garden prep.
Let me
know if you can make it on Tuesday.

looking for ideas and volunteers to make this a really fun
event. If you cannot attend the meeting, please review the

has (and might be willing to donate the materials we need
and send suggestions (and volunteer) for Earth Day by return
email. For more information on the garden see the
website - and feel free to join the networking group to
make suggestions, ask or answer questions and be part of
this project - or just visit the site to keep track of what
is going on. We have had two work days already. Everyone had
fun and we got a lot done. Scroll down for wish list

Century Agriculture includes Diversity
Agritourism could hold the key to financial success.
If you own and operate any agricultural enterprise or
are a land owner looking for increasing or gaining income
from your property, you are invited to attend the
Agritourism Workshop at the Community Center, 928 Russell
Ave. in Walsenburg on April 14. The day-long workshop
provides enterprises with the market analysis, business
planning tools and networking opportunities needed to
succeed. Topics include: liability & risk management for
agritourism operations, marketing and pricing products and
services, and visitor readiness. Speakers from CSU
Extension, Colorado Department of Agriculture, and Western
Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program will
provide expert advice and insights into this exciting new
branch of agriculture. Several agritourism business owners
will also be speaking to give first hand accounts of the
agritourism market.
Birding, hunting, rustic
lodging, religious or corporate retreats, corn mazes,
wineries, farm tours and ranch vacations are all forms of
agritourism in Colorado and across the nation. Agritourism
is gaining in popularity; in fact, in 2006 more than 13
million visitors experienced agritourism in Colorado,
resulting in an economic contribution of $2.2 billion to
Colorado’s economy.
“Colorado agriculture is
diversifying into new areas,” said Wendy White, marketing
specialist for the Colorado Department of Agriculture. “Our
goal is to help producers effectively build their
agritourism operations.”
Register as soon as
possible, seating is limited! The registration fee, which
includes workshop materials and lunch, is $25 per person or
$35 for a couple/ business partner. To register,
visit main website or contact Wendy White at (303)
239-4119 or Dean Oatman at (719) 738-2170. Registration
forms are also available at the CSU extension office, 928
Russel Ave. in Walsenburg.
We are pleased to announce that this Sunday May 16th from
1:00-2:00 pm Penn and Cord Parmenter will be offering a free
class for us at the community garden! They will bring
seedlings, seeds, jugs and mulch for demonstrating different
ways to plant a garden bed, and will teach us about
equidistant spacing, broadcasting, seed to soil contact,
watering, mulching and of course be available to answer our
questions! People flock from all over the state to take Penn
and Cord's high altitude gardening classes. We are so lucky
to have such a wonderful resource right here in the Wet
Mountain Valley! Check out this recent article from the
Denver Post
When the class is over we will have a
garden work day from 2-4 pm. Richard Heacock will be leading
a crew to work on fencing, we will spread wood chips out on
the pathways, and work on controlling weeds by cutting the
heads off of the mullein rosettes. All of the individual
plots will be staked out and marked by Saturday, so if you
already have your plot number feel free to get to work in your
own garden!
We look forward to seeing you there!
